  • 1 lb macaroni
  • 4 cups cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1½ cups milk
  • 1 large egg or 2 small eggs
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • ½ medium onion, grated finely
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Small pat of butter
  • Extra grated cheese for top


  1. Cook macaroni in boiling salted water. Drain and set aside.
  2. Beat egg, then add milk, salt, pepper and grated onion.
  3. In a large buttered pyrex bowl, place a layer of macaroni, sprinkle lavishly with grated cheese and toss lightly. Pour some milk over this layer. Repeat coving the top with cheese, dots of butter and then remainder of milk mixture. Cover top with the extra cheese.
  4. Bake in moderate oven 350 F for approximately 35 - 40 minutes or until lightly browned. Let rest a bit before cutting and serving.
